A Night at Souq Studio (where the magic happens)

Souq Studio is nestled on the fifth floor of an old loft building in Detroit's historic, Eastern Market neighborhood. It is the brain child of Danielle Karmo (leather designer for Shinola) and Deirdre Skiles (me, owner of Detroit Rose). Souq was born of a need to create space for ourselves and our respective ventures. At the time - Detroit Rose was a half baked one woman show run out of my kitchen. I needed to build it a home of its own, a habitat where it would flourish. Today my team and I create, pour and package our candles in Souq Studio. Danielle uses the space on weekends or after work to build her creative portfolio. We're ships in the night - rarely there at the same time. But it's our creative home that we lovingly share.

We attempt to open our studio to our community as often as possible. We hold floral workshops, readings, candle making events, a dinner or two (even though we don't have a kitchen). I'm a firm believer that space holds energy so its important to me that my creative and production space hold the energy of the community that supports it. It's equally important to me that my dear friends, family, neighbors and customers are able to come see where we create our products. Souq is a  special place I'm always eager to share.

Here are a few images from our last friends and family gathering to celebrate the launch of our Ritual Line. This was the eve after the election. I remember walking to the studio that morning (I live only ten minutes away) feeling a  heaviness had thickened the air. I could taste it on my tongue. It felt trivial to gather. I thought maybe I'd cancel. But in the end I didn't. It was a beautiful night. A beautiful example of what a simple gathering place can do. Friends read poems, sipped wine, spoke openly about our fears and intentions for the next four years. Some of us held each other. My friend Martha brought a bucket of flowers and gave each guest a bouquet. I think all of our hearts swelled that night. My friend Mike Moegelin was there with his trusty camera to take these lovely snaps. Enjoy.

Always have a spread when friends come to the studio. This table is made out of a Z frame door I found at Detroit Antique Mall.

Something very special happens as night crawls into the studio. Feels almost magical.
